Welcome to Milagro Moon Ranch

Turning 40 changes things. Maybe it clarifies how you’re living life or shakes something loose that was waiting to fall. In 2002, we were living in Longmont, Colorado, housing chickens behind the garage, trying in vain to improve a rocky, rundown backyard and looking 40 in the face. Our neighbor one day looked over the fence and said, “Are you guys frustrated farmers or something?” We both looked at him and said, “Yes.”
No hesitation for either of us.

In that passing moment, something began to fall away. Now I believe that something was the misguided expectation that life would last forever. Taking other things into consideration besides just the neighbor’s offhand comment, of course, we soon found it was time for a change. It was time to try our hand at farming more than just the backyard.

Ranch Happenings

We hope you’ll join us and 12 other fiber farms and studios for The 5th Annual East Mountain Fiber Farm and Studio Tour, happening June 7th and 8th, 10 am - 5 pm. Our gates will be open for you to come and visit the animals and check out our goat’s milk soaps and fiber products. For a 4-page brochure & map listing all of the locations, CLICK HERE. Or call or email and we’ll send you one in the mail.  You can also find them at Good Fibrations in Edgewood.

In August, Cynthia will also be selling her soaps and felted scarves and dolls at The Art Center at Fuller Lodge’s 2008 Arts and Crafts Fair in Los Alamos. This event is Saturday, August 9th.  And no doubt we’ll be at the Sunflower Festival in Mountainair on Saturday, August 23rd from 10 am – 4 pm.

Stay tuned for more information about the State Fair Alpaca Show happening during the New Mexico State Fair in September.

The first weekend of October (3rd - 4th) you’ll find us at the Taos Wool Festival.  We are very excited to have a booth there this year, as this is a juried event and it was our first time to apply.  Jim and Cynthia have both learned to spin, so we will be featuring our hand-spun yarns, as well as roving, felted items and soaps.

Join our mailing list at info@milagromoonranch.com to receive information about events, or give us a call to arrange a private tour.  We’d love to show you around!

We can also accommodate small groups for field trips.  We have hosted home schoolers and preschoolers, and in May we will be hosting a group of older adults.  We can accommodate groups up to about 12 children plus any parents who wish to join them.  Call for pricing and activity possibilities.

THEN, we discovered alpacas. We soon purchased our first two females, Sweet Megan from Aussie Acres Alpacas in Eaton, Colorado, and Lanark’s Isadora from Xanadu Farm in nearby Platteville, Colorado. The girls remained with their herds until 2004, when we moved them to our 10 acre ranch east of Albuquerque, New Mexico, our new home, complete with plenty of back, front and side yards to improve.

We moved in at the height of snowstorm and mud season. We swept the porch, cleaned the carpets and never looked back. Several months later the girls arrived from their Colorado farms and our great livestock adventure began.

Our growing herd currently numbers ten, but we have our sights on as many as 20 of these beautiful animals grazing our pastures in the coming years. Their gentle humming sounds and alert nature make them a livestock animal whose company is a pleasure.

On our ten acres at the base of South Mountain, east of Albuquerque and an hour south of Santa Fe, we believe farm diversity is important, so we still keep chickens for fresh eggs, and our former neighbor wouldn’t be surprised to find dairy goats added to the mix as well. Our LaMancha dairy goats have their own story, part of which is their contribution of wonderful, creamy milk to our Milagro Moon Fine Soaps. Made with fresh goat’s milk and generous amounts of gentle olive oil, our soaps will make you rethink your skin care.

We also believe visitors are important, so give us a call. We'd love to show you our special place under the vast east mountain skies.
